Kivikesku

Kivikesku is a rugged, wilderness-like lake reached by a marked trail of about 1 kilometre. The route passes through swamp forest and small bog ponds, continuing across rocky pine terrain and over a ridge down to the lakeshore. Along the way, a viewing platform overlooks the bog lake Pikku Kivikesku. At the shore, there are two maintained campfire sites, a lean-to shelter, and another viewing platform.
Although the wettest sections have duckboards, the trail can still be muddy in spring and after rainfall, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
Kivikesku is part of the Kaakkurijärvet Natura Area, an important breeding site for the red-throated diver. Artificial nesting islands have been installed to support breeding success. The birds should not be approached, and movement along the shores should be avoided from 15 April to 1 July, though the marked trail remains open. The area’s quiet nature offers opportunities to observe bog habitats and birdlife with care and respect.
At the designated campfire sites, making a fire is permitted; elsewhere it is prohibited. Open fires must never be left unattended, and during wildfire warnings all fires are forbidden. Firewood may be taken from the shelter at the start of the trail, and all waste must be carried out.
The 37-hectare Kivikesku Nature Reserve lies north of Porintie Road. The trail begins from Koukkujärventie, about one kilometre past the Kankaantaan Kisa lodge. Camping and motor vehicle use are prohibited, and dogs must be kept leashed.
Within the Kaakkurijärvet Natura Area, the following are forbidden: open fires without landowner permission, construction, motor vehicle use, camping, boat keeping, and water access from 15 April to 31 August without permission, as well as disturbing wildlife or damaging nests..
The area includes extensive private land, so landowners must be respected and disturbance avoided. Moving responsibly allows visitors to enjoy the peace and natural quiet of the area.
