Suoniemi Church

Suoniemen kirkko ulkoa
Last updated:

Suoniemi Church is the oldest church in Nokia, dedicated to the Apostle John. The wooden cross-shaped church was completed and consecrated in 1803, with a separate bell tower added in 1820. The design came from miller Gustav Stenman.

Nearby are two historical museum sites: a grain storage from 1860 and the former autopsy room once used by the district physician, which remained in its original function until the 1950s.

The church’s pneumatic 12-stop organ, built in 1903 by Bror Axel Thulé of the Kangasala Organ Factory, has been preserved completely in its original state. Originally, the altar wall featured a naive-style wooden crucifix, now displayed at the Nokia Church Museum. In 1903, it was replaced with a painting of the Crucifixion by Felix Frang. Behind the pulpit is a stained-glass work by Hannu Konola, Moses and the Burning Bush.
